What to do with fruits that have gone soft in the fridge
We all know them: those poor forgotten fruits in the fridge drawer. Too cold, they've lost their crunch, their texture has become a bit soft... But here's the thing... these soft fruits still have so much to offer. They just need a second chance.
1. Quick smoothies ?
Soft texture? Perfect for the blender.
Blend your soft fruits with a little milk (dairy or plant-based), a spoonful of yogurt, and voilà: a creamy smoothie that’s zero waste and packed with vitamins.
2. Compotes & purees ?
Tired apples? Mushy pears?
Just cook them gently with a little water, maybe a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla → and you get an amazing homemade compote.
3. Cakes & muffins ?
Browning bananas make the best banana breads.
Soft apples? Perfect in a rustic tart or in muffins.
Their natural sugar and “slightly mushy” texture create ultra-moist pastries without added sugar.
4. Jams & coulis ?
Soft strawberries, raspberries, peaches… don’t underestimate them.
In just a few minutes of cooking with a little sugar and lemon, they transform into homemade jam or coulis to pour over yogurt.
5. Dressed-up fruit salads ?
Add:
- Some lemon zest or a drizzle of orange juice → it instantly revives slightly soft fruits.
- Add a few fresh mint leaves and your fruit salad regains all its brightness.
? The UglyFruits tip
Don’t put your fruits in the fridge (except for special cases like very fragile berries). The cold breaks down their fibers and speeds up that softening we dislike so much.
✅ Store them at room temperature, in a fruit bowl with good air circulation
